Dear Colleagues and Friends

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my honour to welcome you to Laboratory Medicine 98, the XXVI Nordic Congress of Clinical Chemistry. The first Nordic meeting in the field of clinical chemistry was held in Norway in 1946. The participation of Finnish delegates into this meeting inspired them to found the Finnish Society of Clinical Chemistry, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1997. The first Congress in Finland took place in 1950 in Aulanko. After that, four Nordic Congresses have been held in Finland. In the early days, the Nordic cooperation in our field was very active and it still is, as many of the activities of the Nordic Society of Clinical Chemistry have been also introduced into international arenas.

The Scientific Program of this Congress will include four plenary lectures, 13 symposia and workshops, some of which will be industry-sponsored. There will be an exciting Social Program through the generous support of our sponsors. The Industrial Exhibition will provide you with an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with the latest trends of current technology.

People who have participated in a scientific meeting often remember later on only the weather and not the scientific program of the meeting. Whether the sun will shine or not, we hope that you will later remember the Congress as an attractive and successful one, both from a professional and social point of view.

I warmly welcome you and your family members in Turku in June 1998,

Kari Pulkki
Chairman of the Organizing Committee

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

On behalf of the Nordic Society of Clinical Chemistry it is a pleasure for me to wish you all welcome to the XXVI Nordic Congress of Clinical Chemistry. When the first Nordic Congress was arranged at Finse in 1946 it was stated in the Invitation that the purpose of the meeting was to give all colleagues working in clinical chemistry and clinical physiology in the Nordic countries an opportunity to meet each other and discuss common problems. An important aspect was establishing contacts across the borders, both scientifically and socially. Since then the Nordic Congresses have been arranged in this spirit and have always been one of the main pillars in the cooperation between the Nordic countries. It is a pleasure for me to see that the present Congress follows the traditions in presenting a program of very high quality. I want to thank the Organizing Committee and the Finnish Society of Clinical Chemistry for doing such a fantastic job in planning and arranging this congress. I wish all participants a high scientific outcome and a nice stay in Turku.

Tor-Arne Hagve
Chairman of the Scandinavian Society for Clinical Chemistry

Nordiske kongress i klinisk kjemi.

Tor-Arne Hagve
Formann i Nordisk Forening for Klinisk Kjemi

Dear Colleagues,

The laboratory professionals in Finland, like those in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, established a scientific organization of their own already in the 1940's. The Finnish Society of Clinical Chemistry (and Physiology) had its first official meeting in 1947 and was registered in 1950. We celebrated our 50th anniversary a year ago. Besides numerous other activities, the Finnish Society has organized several international congresses in the past. This congress will be the 6th Nordic Congress organized by our Society. The previous Nordic Congress organized in Finland was held in Kuopio in June 1988. Great changes have taken place in laboratory medicine during the past ten years. Today automation, robotics and accreditation are very important parts of the everyday life of laboratories. Many new methods have been taken into routine use during these years. The Scientific Program and Workshops of Laboratory Medicine '98 will highlight all these aspects of clinical chemistry of today and of the future. On behalf of the Finnish Society of Clinical Chemistry, I warmly welcome you to the XXVI Nordic Congress of Clinical Chemistry in Turku. I hope that the Congress will meet your expectations not only as to the Scientific Program but also regarding the cultural Social Program. I wish you a pleasant and fruitful Congress.

Päivi Laitinen

Turku - General Information and Transportation

Turku, (in Swedish Åbo), the oldest city and former capital of Finland, is situated by the Baltic Sea, by the River Aura. The city and the lovely archipelago have something to offer to everyone.

Turku can be easily accessed both by air and sea. There is a passenger harbour and an airport. The distance between Turku and Helsinki is about 160 kilometres, only 30 minutes by air or about 2 hours by train or bus.

A pleasant way to travel to the congress is to take one of the ferries from Stockholm. A ferry departing from Stockholm in the evening will arrive in Turku at about 8.00 a.m., just conveniently before the morning session. From the passenger harbour you can take a bus or a taxi to the Congress Venue. The taxi fee from the harbour is about FIM 40-50.

If you arrive by air, there is a bus (No 1) connection from the Turku airport to the Market Square, from where you can continue to the Congress Venue (buses 50, 51, 53, 54). The taxi fare from the airport to the Congress Venue is approximately FIM 80. Please see the website http://www.ilmailulaitos.com/lentoase/tur/aikataul.htm for Turku flights.

Finnair has been appointed the official carrier of the Congress. Please contact your nearest Finnair sales office to find out which special fares will be available to you.

Weather
In early June, Turku usually enjoys pleasant spring or summer weather. Expect day temperatures within the +8...+20° C range. There is a moderate chance of occasional showers and especially the evenings are chilly. The average temperature is +15oC.
