The Medical Imaging Centre at the Turku University Central Hospital consists of three major units: the Department of Radiology, the Department of Nuclear Medicine and the PET (Positron Emission Tomography) Centre. The number of examinations is around 130.000 per year. Several innovative projects in the fields of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), Digital Imaging and Digital Data Transfer are in progress. Advanced imaging techniques, such as Spiral CT, Open Low Field Magnetic Resonance Imaging (0.23T), PET, and Dynamic Pulmonary Imaging, are in routine use. Interventional procedures such as coronary angioplasty and therapeutic embolism are performed routinely in the Department of Radiology. The number of coronary angioplasties (over 300 annually) exceeds that of coronary bypass surgery in the hospital. The Turku PET Centre is the only one in the country and is an important international research facility. A digital archive was founded in 1995. The ultimate goal of the Imaging Centre is to provide multimodality facilities for research and clinical examination of the highest international standards. We have several collaborative research programs with a number of leading institutions in Europe and the U.S. A local Image Network has been established between the Imaging Centre and the Central Hospitals of Pori and Mariehamn. Medical students from T.U. are being trained at the hospital and teaching is another important activity.
