Dicom 3.0 Radiology Image Network

During the past couple of years the Hospital has made a great effort in digitalizing the complete imaging system. The Medical Imaging Centre and the Hospital participate to the University research program, RAMI (Road Ahead in the Medical Information Management). General principles of teleradiology, such as cost effectiviness, accuracy of treatment and patientsī comfort are valid while adapting the dig ital image transmission. The Dicom 3.0 Standard ensures that other equipment adapted in the future will be in accordance to the already existing Network. There is an ATM switch installed within the Hospital, with connections to the Turku University Denti stry Department (distance 500m) and to the Paimio Hospital Unit (distance 30 km). Digital images are transferred from this Unit for consultation to the Central University Hospital of Turku. The Hospital benefits of ISDN Network to the Central Hospital of Satakunta (distance 160 km) and to the Central Hospital of Marienhamn (distance about 85 nautical miles) . In designing and creating these complexe networks the Sonera Oy has a major role. The tendency is towards a non-printing environment with, whenever possible, only digital imaging. Itīs possible to reduce the costs and improve the quality of health care with the implementations of this new technology unique in Europe.
